Z-TEXT | Built on BitcoinZ

The messenger with no central servers.

Z-TEXT runs on BitcoinZ nodes spread across the world. Every message is a shielded BitcoinZ transaction. No phone number, no email, and no company holding your conversations.

The one idea

Other messengers run on company servers. Z-TEXT runs on BitcoinZ nodes worldwide.

Signal, WhatsApp, and Telegram all pass your messages through servers their company runs. Z-TEXT has no central server in the message path. A message is encrypted on your device and broadcast as a shielded transaction to the BitcoinZ network, where independent nodes spread across the world relay it, the same way BTCZ itself is sent.

  1. 1 AES-256-GCM

    You type

The message is encrypted on your device with a key that only you and your contact share.

  2. 2 zk-SNARKs

    It becomes a transaction

The encrypted text rides in the memo of a shielded BitcoinZ transaction. Sender, recipient, and amount are hidden.

  3. 3 1 to 5 seconds

    The network carries it

BitcoinZ nodes around the world relay it. Your contact's app picks it up from the network and never learns your IP address.

  4. 4 On-chain

    It stays

The encrypted message settles on the blockchain. Your 24-word seed reads it back on any device.

Why it is unique

What a blockchain messenger can do that a central server cannot

No phone number. No email.

Your identity is a wallet seed, not a SIM card. There is nothing to register and nothing that ties the account to you.

Nothing to seize or switch off

No central server holds your messages. They travel through BitcoinZ nodes spread across the world, so if the company behind the app vanished tomorrow, messaging would keep running.

Two locks on every message

AES-256-GCM on your device, then a shielded transaction on top. Both layers have to be broken to read a single message.

Your IP stays yours

There is no direct connection between you and your contact. Their app pulls the message from the network, so they never see where it came from.

24 words bring everything back

Lose the phone, keep the seed. Wallet, messages, contacts, and vault restore on any device. No cloud backup and no recovery form.

A wallet inside the chat

Send BTCZ in the middle of a conversation. Z-TEXT is also the official BitcoinZ wallet, and sending or receiving BTCZ needs no license.

Spam has to pay

A chat starts only after a mutual cryptographic handshake, and every message costs about $0.00003 on-chain. Invisible to you, too expensive for bots.

Panic PIN and stealth mode

An emergency PIN wipes keys, messages, and contacts in one action. Stealth mode re-skins the app so it does not look like a messenger.

Post-quantum handshake

Since version 3.7.0 every contact handshake combines X25519 with ML-KEM-768 (NIST FIPS 203), protecting the key exchange against a future quantum computer.

Attaching a BTCZ payment to a Z-TEXT conversation

Money moves like a message

Attach BTCZ to a conversation and it arrives as part of the chat. The wallet is not an add-on. The messenger is built on it.

Z-TEXT as a wallet →
A Z-TEXT chat about restoring everything on a new phone from 24 words

New phone, same conversations

Enter your 24 words and the app rescans the blockchain. Wallet, messages, and contacts come back exactly as you left them.

On-chain channels

Reach everyone for the price of one transaction

A channel is a shared mailbox on the blockchain. You post once and every subscriber's app reads it. The cost is the same for 10 followers or 10,000, and reading is always free.

  • Impossible to deplatform. There is no central server to seize and no account to suspend.
  • No subscriber list to leak. zk-SNARKs hide who posted, and no central database of followers exists.
  • You own your audience. Channels and their history restore from your seed on any device.

Trust model

Choose how much you trust anyone

Three ways to connect. Each one moves the trust boundary closer to you, and you can switch between them without losing a single message.

Tier 1

Default

Official lightd server

The server sees that a shielded transaction was submitted. It cannot see the sender, the recipient, the amount, or the content.

Tier 2

Tor

Official lightd over Tor

Same shielding, and the server operator no longer sees your IP address either.

Tier 3

Self-hosted

Your own lightd or full BitcoinZ node

No third party is in the loop at all, including the company that makes Z-TEXT.

The trade-offs

What Z-TEXT does not do

A design this different comes with real limits. Z-TEXT publishes them, and so do we.

Read the full threat model →
  • Text only. No files, pictures, or videos. Z-TEXT carries encrypted text and BTCZ, nothing else.
  • Your seed is everything. There is no perfect forward secrecy. Anyone who gets your 24 words can read every message and spend your funds.
  • Messages are permanent. What settles on the blockchain cannot be deleted, by you or by anyone else.
  • Your provider sees the network. Your internet provider can tell that you connect to BitcoinZ, unless you add Tor or a VPN.
  • Sending needs a license. Sending messages requires a Z-TEXT license. Receiving messages and all wallet functions do not.

Built on BitcoinZ

Every conversation is activity on the BTCZ network

Z-TEXT is not a separate token and not a layer-2 chain. It writes encrypted messages straight through BitcoinZ shielded transactions, so the privacy technology BitcoinZ has carried since 2017 now has an everyday use.
